Closing The Bones - Robozo Ceremony

A deeply healing, nurturing and nourishing ritual for anyone moving through a significant life transition.

Traditionally offered to women after birth, this ancient practice can also be deeply supportive at many other moments in life, through loss or trauma, the ending of a relationship or chapter, periods of change, new beginnings, or simply at a time when you feel the need to release, reconnect and come back to yourself.

Closing of the Bones is a shamanic tradition originating from Ecuador and Mexico, although similar ancient practices and rituals can be found throughout many other parts of the world.

The ceremony combines massage using the hands with gentle rocking, movement and wrapping of the body using traditional rebozo shawls.

On a physical level, the gentle massage, rocking and wrapping help to move the joints, muscles, tissues and fluids, supporting the body in coming back together and returning towards its optimal position after pregnancy and birth. It can also help aid the healing process of diastasis recti and bring a sense of physical support and closure after the openness and expansion of pregnancy and birth.

On an emotional level, it provides a space to rest, receive and be held. On an energetic level, it creates space to release and bring things to a close. For those who have experienced trauma or a difficult birth, the ritual can also provide a deeply held space for healing and integration.

There is no set time in which this ritual needs to be received. Postpartum, it can be experienced whenever a woman feels ready, whether that is a few days, months or even several years after giving birth. Some women choose to receive more than one session during this delicate period.

What to Expect

We begin by creating a quiet, intentional space where you can arrive, slow down and share anything you feel you would like to bring into the ceremony.

The physical practice combines nurturing massage with traditional rebozo techniques. The shawls are used to gently rock, move and hold different areas of the body, then we give a gentle massage of the womb and abdominals, before wrapping the body at several points from head to feet.

The wrapping creates a beautiful sense of containment, physically bringing the body back together while also creating an opportunity to turn inward, rest and receive.

There is space during the ceremony for whatever needs to arise: deep rest, emotion, reflection, release or simply the experience of being held and cared for.  The ceremony closes slowly, allowing time to integrate the experience before returning to the outside world.

How It Can Be Experienced

One-to-One Ceremony -   This is my preferred way to offer Closing of the Bones, allowing the ceremony to be completely centred around you and your individual experience.

Group Ceremony - This creates a different experience, with the additional element of being witnessed and supported by others.  A group ceremony can be particularly beautiful as part of a retreat, women's gathering or as a meaningful ritual created for a friend or loved one.

I am deeply grateful and honoured to offer this ancient tradition and help keep it alive, serving those who feel called to receive it.

If you would like to experience a Closing of the Bones Ceremony, either one-to-one or as part of a group, please feel free to reach out.
